KANSAS CITY, MO – March 18, 2024 – The Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City, Missouri proudly announces that Cathcart Rail (“Cathcart”) will undergo a significant two-phase expansion of their railcar repair facility at 7750 Wilson Ave. Kansas City, Missouri. This expansion marks a strategic move for Cathcart, an integral part of the freight logistics network in Kansas City, supporting rail shippers with tank railcar repair and requalification.

Led by Nathan Vanice, EDCKC Business Development Officer, EDCKC supported Cathcart by assisting with their Enhanced Enterprise Zone (EEZ) tax abatement application, as well as navigating the Missouri Works program. As the state’s number one incentive tool for expansion and retention, the Missouri Works program helps businesses access capital through withholdings or tax credits to embark on facility expansions and create jobs. The program can also help businesses purchase equipment to maintain their facility in Missouri.

“We would like to thank Nate for all his efforts in helping us access capital and incentives within the state of Missouri. Cathcart’s investment in Kansas City will increase the production capabilities, capacity, and efficiency of its facility in support of the major shipper-customers across the region,” said Doug Schwieger, Chief Transformation Officer at Cathcart.

Over the next several years, Cathcart will undergo a $10M+ two-phase capital investment effort to renovate and expand their existing facility near the Missouri River Terminal (“MRT”), which is slated for over a $500 million expansion over four phases beginning in 2024. Expansion efforts will allow Cathcart to grow its repair operations, rail services, and more.

In addition, Cathcart plans to create 20+ new jobs with an average wage of $54,000, an increase from its current 33 personnel in Kansas City, Missouri.

“Cathcart’s investment in Kansas City underscores its commitment to meeting the evolving needs of its customers, while further solidifying a presence in the region,” said Steven Anthony, EDCKC’s Vice President of Business Development. “The creation of new job opportunities and the potential for future catalytic growth near the Missouri River Terminal is very exciting.”
